Got me like nobody

I don't usually spend much time on mash-ups--rarely for me do they exceed the pleasure of listening to the original songs. Sometimes, though, even if they can't do that, they succeed in reawakening your love for the originals and cluing you in to aspects you never fully paid attention to before.

(Thanks to Alex for the tip!)

Just when I thought I was losing interest in "Poker Face," here comes DJ King Rollo with a mash-up of Charlotte Perrelli's "Hero" and Lady GaGa's "Poker Face," re-entitled "Hero Face." Taking the instrumental from "Hero" and the vocals from "Poker Face," the end result is a-mah-mah-mazing. It's really well done and, if nothing else, should increase your appreciation for just how killer (and beautiful) Fredrik Kempe and Bobby Ljunggren's writing and Bassflow's production are, as well as maybe get you thinking that the toplines Lady GaGa co-writes could work outside the RedOne context. Though I'm sure she'll never go in this direction, "Hero"'s combination of this style of electronic beats, longing strings, and piano all creating a poppy song is something that has a substance to it that I don't think even I--who loves "Hero"--fully appreciated until hearing this mash-up. As much as "Hero" got written off as a cheap Europop rip-off of "Cara Mia" in some quarters (not here!), if anything, this mash-up proves to me just how international in quality the work that went into it is.

In short: probably the best song I've heard this week (edit: though the chorus of Girls Aloud's "It's Your Dynamite" is really good).

The Girls Aloud bside is class isn't it? I just spent a fortune on their singles boxset. I figure it will be worth a fortune one day on ebay when i'm poor and destitute. Tragically it all feels very "nothing more from us for a while" though doesn't it :(

I will admit, even though I hate gaga and will never refer to her as a lady, I can stand listening to this. good find.

Aww, ha ha, thanks, John! Or "ridiculously cheesy," take your pick.

Paul, I really like it! I'm trying to pretend that box set doesn't exist--it's so much more than I need to be considering spending. We'll see how successful I am...we've known for a while there won't be any new music from them this year and I think the girls have stated the next album will be coming out in fall 2010 (though I'm sure that's very much approximate).

I'd like to take credit, Adam, but it was all Alex! I do understand your feelings towards her.

Really good mashup! I agree, most mashups are average or boring, but this one is very well done. Who knew "Hero" and "Poker Face" would marry up so well?

I'm glad you thought it was well-done, too, Yuri. I definitely never would have guessed it!

I love this mash, it's the second mash with Hero I love. First one was Charlotte Perrelli ft. Timbaland - The Way Hero's Are But mash with Lady Gaga is just fantastic)

The key change is great. It could benefit from some choreography being performed with it, though, and some camera spinning and lasers!

I hadn't heard that mash-up! FURTHER proof of how amazing "Hero" is--and that the work behind it is international-quality (even if the song itself couldn't be an international hit). I'm surprised at how well that works, but it really does.
