All your noise is messing with my head

D'luv may have beaten me to writing about Ashlee Simpson's new album cover, but I'm going to go for a hat trick of writing about artists or songs he dislikes and write about Ashlee today anyway. Her first album is one I associate with a very specific time period: my stepsister and cousin both bought copies of it when we were out in San Francisco and for about two weeks all I heard was that or the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack. I don't think I could hum anything beyond "Autobiography," "Pieces of Me," and "La La" from it now, but those are three great songs. I thought "Boyfriend," the lead single for her second album, was great, but couldn't stand "L.O.V.E." and never listened to her second album. I guess the point of all this reminiscing is to say that I was open to liking her new material but not guaranteed to like it. I really appreciated the thought behind the her Timbaland-penned third album lead single "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)," but it just didn't quite work for me--it was so close to being a great song, but just missing something, and it being that close and then missing out made it such a frustrating listen that I quickly moved on.

Thank goodness for Brad Walsh, then--I had a couple of his songs from a few years ago but hadn't followed him since (apparently he's dating Christian from Project Runway now), but if what he's done to "Outta My Head" is any indication, I should've been paying proper attention to him earlier, or at least to his remix work. His remix of "Outta My Head" isn't a radical reinvention of the song--instead, it's like he's just...finished it, made it complete. It's now got more electro crunch and more of a feeling of forward motion (which I am really thankful for).

Outta My Head (Brad Walsh Remix)

This remix was put up as a free download, but you can buy Brad Walsh's albums from iTunes here (digital) and the original version of Ashlee Simpson's "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" from iTunes (in the U.S.) here.

Next up: maybe something Swedish.

I like the remix, but still really love the original... It reminds me so much of Madonna's "Burning Up" and a bit of that "I Eat Cannibals" song from the 80's.

I'm a little bit disheartened it's flopped too!

PS: On second listen, the remix sounds like what "Burning Up" would sound like had it been released in 2008 so, really, good job all round I say.

i really don't get Ashlee Simpson and it certainly wasn't for lack of trying as she seemed like a popstar i could really like. Something didn't connect, and while i like the odd tune, I find her and her sister (and certainly their creepy inappropriate father) too needy and desperate. Having said that, the remix is quite hummable.

For what it's worth, "L.O.V.E." (which I enjoy) isn't at all typical of the songs on Ashlee's second album. I recommend you check it out, especially "Coming Back for More". I'll check out this remix when I get home from work.

...and after all the money that was spent on that video--they must have really expected it to do well! I wonder if they'll go international with it?

Yeah, I can understand that, Paul--some people don't like her just because it's not "cool" or whatever, but I don't think that would have been a problem for you ;) so I believe that there was just something missing for you.

I do actually know I lot of people that didn't like her earlier work and say they like "L.O.V.E."--I'll have to do that, as well as revisit the first album (something I've been meaning to do for a while). If you like "Outta My Head" already or found it lacking because it was less...Ashlee, I don't think the remix will improve or change your opinion, but it's more...kicky now for me.

Just wait for when I do Mika week, D'luv! Just for you.

PPG, I'm a huge Ashlee fan (hard to guess, right?) and have weathered many insults about said fact from our dear Mr. D'Luv (I work right next to him).

I'd advise you checking out I Am Me again though for a second listen. There are some really beautiful, melancholy pop moments on it. My favorite song is "Dancing Alone": check it and I hope you like.

Stay strong!

..."Dancing Alone" isn't like what I would have expected at all--it's great!
