My heart's keeping time to the speed of sound

Hairspray!

After hearing nothing but good things from everyone I know who'd seen it, I finally got to see this movie and, not surprisingly at all, I LOVED it. Big cheesy catchy songs, loads of choreographed group dancing--how could I not? Songs I'm currently loving: "Good Morning Baltimore," "Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)," "Without Love" (though that's mainly for the accompanying scene in the movie itself--it loses a lot just being listened to as a song, but at that point while watching the movie I had the biggest cheesy grin on my face that I could not get rid of), and the two I'm posting.

You Can't Stop The Beat--the song that will probably be almost everyone's favorite. "Can't Stop The Beat" is the definition of infectiously catchy and happy. This song, sung by a bunch of the cast, might rely a little on you knowing the movie for some of the lyrics to make sense, but when the music is this catchy, that doesn't matter.

Ladies' Choice--this Zac Efron-sung song didn't do much for me during the movie (though the scene was good), but when I was listening to the soundtrack, it quickly jumped out at me. My main judging criteria was basically how much trouble I had resisting the urge to dance while listening to it, and it passes that test with flying colors, even if it has its awkward moments (that deep backing voice, for one) and doesn't have quite the musical depth of some of my other favorites. It may be wrong, but I love the lyrics too.

To buy the soundtrack to the film Hairspray, go here (physical) or here (digital). It's also available in all countries' iTunes stores except Australia's, I think.

Speaking of Hairspray, go read Chart Rigger's Link Larkin-doll featuring post from a few days ago. I'm hoping it turns into an ongoing series...

Next up: a Spanish singer or an American one.

The best scene in the whole movie to me is Tracy shoving people into lockers while singing "I Can Hear The Bells"....

I agree with Stu - that's hilarious! haha. Yay! it's the PPG post i've been waiting for, though i am hurt and shunned that you didn't mention my obsessiveness of it :P HAHA. I really like Without Love now, even without the accompanying scenes, though you're right - lines like "let me out at the next toll" make little sense without a visual context. Come So Far is an amazing little poptune, and I really like ladies choice now. Plus Michelle Pfeiffer shimmying her way through Miss Baltimore Crabs is just too delish. I'm all for integration. It's the new frontier...
(And rar to James Marsden)! Check out my review on Weds!

YES! "I can hear the bells" locker-shoving was my favourite laugh-out-loud moment too. Just saw this tonight, loveeeeed it. Am looking forward to retiring the Sugababes single for the soundtrack at some point this week.

Just got the soundtrack myself, though I didn't buy it (nor have I seen the movie yet)... a friend was taking a bunch of promo stuff he'd gotten to sell at Amoeba (giant music/DVD store out here), and I grabbed the soundtrack out of his box of stuff.

Link will be back this week!

Yes! I love that! And the "devil child, devil child" bit, too.

I really should have mentioned you :( Sorry! And I know! With all this talk about Zac, where's the James Marsden appreciation?

Love that song and scene--it's fantastic. Like almost the whole movie, actually (well, it slows down maybe a little in the middle for me, but beyond that).

I need to make some friends that get sent promo stuff! And I can't wait.

I agree on the original being the best. For Divine alone. You just cannot better a John Waters production, but the musical comes close. I am very happy that John (and Ricki-Lake!) makes a cameo in the musical. Typically as a flasher too.

Do you know, I've never seen the original--if anything's a classic, chances are I've never seen it. I did notice the John Waters cameo (and Ricki Lake), though!

Ooo, yeah, Rik-key, I'll definitely add you to my links! I love the international flavor of your blog. And you've got some Greek artists! I was just saying the other day to someone that I really wanted to find some more Greek artists that I like, because I hardly know any.
