Every second counts

Apparently, Kris Allen's debuting-on-Monday single is a cover of the Script's "We Cry" b-side, "Live Like We're Dying."

Further "apparently," it sounds something like this:

There's not much crazier than judging a song based on a twenty second clip, but a few preliminary thoughts come up.

On the one hand, sounding like the Script--well, sounding like the best half of the Script's musical output--is about as good a sound for Kris as I could have hoped for. On the other hand, I couldn't really recognize his voice for the whole first part of that clip, until he actually sang the "gotta live like we're dying" line--which probably concerns me more than the fact that his lead single is a cover (it's a great song, definitely better than the A-side it accompanied, not exactly widely heard given its B-side status, and suits Kris sound-wise perfectly; what we do hear of his voice here melds into the song perfectly). I think my (very premature) attitude for the moment is: idea of the cover is fine...hopefully it's just not lazily done. He's an American Idol winner, so really, the odds that it will be shouldn't be that great.

Anyway, potentially promising start for Kris--now hopefully he follows through and Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta both deliver.

Good idea working with the Script but the lyrics to that song are as trite as they come!

The fact that the Script have so far failed to break through here is a disappointment, so maybe this helps bring some attention to them. I'm a bit underwhelmed at Kris's performance, but it is only 20 seconds.

I actually had to stop for 10 seconds and remember who Kris Allen is. Then I remembered, oh, yeah—the only F-able contestant from American Idol in the past five years.

That's true--not the Script's best work lyrically (though some of my favorite lines of theirs are probably dubbed too cheesy by others), but with up-tempo-ish songs that are catchy, I tend to be more forgiving of that.

John, I really thought they had a chance--I still haven't given up hope on some sort of last minute revival (a la the Veronicas' "Untouched"), truth be told, since I can't face a reality where songs like "Breakeven," "Before The Worst," "Talk You Down," and "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" aren't enough to get a group established on American radio.

What, Robbie, only one? Well, maybe, depending on personal preference...

with reference to Robbie's comment - i can think of at least 3 (blake Lewis being the most obvious!) But musically - well it's what I expected for Kris and it's done quite well and is nicely polished. So much like the latest JLS single - it's generic but done very well generic and just what is expected and very pleasant. Enjoyable yes, but hard to get that "ooo excited" new music feeling about. God, I waffle sometimes!

I forgot about Blake, aka Lil' Fuzzy. He'd be good for a drunken ram in the backseat, I s'pose. But just one. Or two.
