Baby, don't call me babyyyyy

I keep going back and forth on Ukraine's Eurovision entry this year. On the one hand, I love it; on the other hand, I'm very worried about it being a threat to Charlotte--they're both in the same semi (see Nina's post for more; Iceland, Sweden, and Ukraine are all in the first four entries in the second semi). However, on seeing the video for this dance-friendly pop stomper (the video doesn't really get going until the second half)...

...I am finding it VERY hard to prevent my "OMG! Shiny outfits! Giant hair! Big hoop earrings! Wind machines! Major dancing! Dramatic looks accompanied by dramatic strings! Disco balls! Exploding disco balls!" side from bursting out and just declaring the whole thing FABULOUS. And sure, maybe there's a surplus of winks (usually equally fabulous), but can't we overlook that--I mean, if you were Ani Lorak and you had this song behind you, wouldn't you go around winking all the time too?

It's a great song, and the fact that Capital FM are supporting it in ESC bodes well for it (Capital is BIG in London).

Are they really? Wow! I take it they must be a pretty...different sort of radio station. That's great!

You know, I wonder if this would be getting such rave reviews from the Eurofans if it were the UK or German entry. I'm not one of those who totally buys into the argument that Eurovision is now all about bloc votes, but I do think Ukraine and other neighbouring countries get a bit of an easy ride when it comes to scrutiny. That's not to say I don't like 'Shady Lady'; I do, but just not to the extent to want to see it challenging for victory.

It's funny you say that--I've actually had my own question recently in regards to "Shady Lady": say there was a song like this (though with different lyrics, obviously), but sung by a male singer--would the Eurovision fan reaction be so enthusiastic about it? I realize that, yes, there was a generally positive reaction to Koldun last year and many people like the Paolo ballad this year, but it often seems like female singers have it a lot easier in winning over Eurovision fans.

More on topic, I do really like the song--it's along the lines of what I expected Kontopolous (sp? sorry if that's off) to enter when I heard he'd be in the Greek national final this year--but at the moment I'm not sure how much I'll love it once Eurovision season is over--I could still like it (and my love for it could even increase), or I could move on. "Hero," on the other hand, is a song I know I'll be listening to all year.

Don't worry about her being a threat to Charlotte - Hero won't win the whole thing anyway.

Cheer on Ani Lorak over the boring Serbian ballad and everything else that's a threat. This is fab.

I'm (excessively, I'll admit) worried about the semifinals, though--I'm probably just trying to steel myself for the worst, but the whole Iceland first, Sweden second, Ukraine fourth has me worried. Unlike other fan favorites that have crashed and burned, though, I'm pretty sure we can count on Iceland and Sweden having good vocal performances, at least, though we don't know what the staging will be like yet.
