#19 Jonas Brothers, "S.O.S."

It's true
I gave my all for you,
now my heart's in two
And I can't find the other half
It's like I'm walking on broken glass,
better believe I bled

I think every time I've mentioned Radio Disney favorites the Jonas Brothers on here it's been negative, the biggest example probably being 2006's illogical rant about their recycling of Busted songs (which, though I still know it makes NO sense, I'm apparently still not over--the music video for "Year 3000" came on while I was out Christmas shopping and got me wound up all over again), but it's continued into more recent times, with them being my go-to example for how to do pop-rock poorly...even if I did reluctantly admit liking a song or two of theirs.

Imagine my worry and surprise, then, when I found myself really enjoying second album single "S.O.S.", an enjoyment that eventually (and reluctantly, as I still didn't want to be won over by them) turned into full-fledged love. "S.O.S." is incredibly catchy, something which I'd felt like was missing from most of what I'd heard from them earlier. It's the sound of a band at the top of their game, every unnecessary element (i.e., those not adding anything to catchiness) stripped out to create the ultimate streamlined pop-rock song (look at them hitting the chorus 21 seconds in! That's quicker than most Eurovision songs). Well, the ultimate streamlined pop-rock song that comes from the youthful side of the spectrum. The guitar instrumental bit that opens the song and goes on to fill in each verse is an instant attention-grabber, creating a stop-start rhythm that adds punch and pep, meaning that the Jonas Brothers have done something a lot of pop artists fail at: created a pop song that's more than just a catchy chorus. All right, boys, I'm willing to admit it may just have been posing (on my part) that was holding me back from liking you before...if I hear one more song from you that I love, I'll get the album.

S.O.S.

Find it on: Jonas Brothers

I have an annoying co-worker who always talks about her 15 year old daughter's obsession with the Jonas Brothers...

Since I don't particularly like this co-worker, I don't particularly like the Jonas Brothers either. Maybe when she shuts up, I can give them a chance...until then, I will stick to other mediums...

Oh no! PPG!! Tell me you aren't posting a good review about the Jonas Bros?! lol just kidding just kidding! We still love ya.

I surely hope that you don't have a Hannah Montanna track coming up next ;-) Im just buggin ya... we've been playing 'Best Of Both Worlds' by Hannah at work lately and I cant get it out of my head... and i REFUSE to download it because its Hannah Montanna...

I suppose if I'm allowed to like S Club Juniors and Amy Diamond you can like Jonas Bros ;) I was pretty annoyed at all the lame 'Busted' covers as well... to take songs from a band that was really quite good and water them down for the US market is sincerely annoying! Im sure their new stuff isnt as bad... but im holding that against them still :P

ok here's the skinny on the brothers jonas. I despised them at first, saw them as not only a busted rip off band but possibly taking away success in the states from McFly. the cads. And then they do a dodgy cover of Kids In America? BAH! But then the fuckers (scuse my french - actually i can't speak french so i let the funky music do the talking talking now) went and did a few good songs and their album somewhat appeals to me. I usually have no shame in liking pop acts but this is one of the few groups i blush at admitting liking!

But i swear I had no clue it was them :P

I can relate! Actually, come to think of it, to both you and that daughter, given that I've had more than my fair share of over-the-top obsessions, though not with the Jonas Brothers...

Ha ha, Troy! To be honest, if it was an official single and not just seemingly randomly getting radioplay, Miley's "See You Again" would definitely have been somewhere in this list! I don't know any of her songs beyond that, though. The Jonas Brothers have a song called "Jenny" too?

I know what you're talking about, Paul! I think your willingness to admit to liking some of their songs has enabled me to as well ;)

Troy - are you thinking of The Click Five singing Jenny?

I have to say, these dorks make me want to projectile vomit onto the ceiling. But that which does not kill us makes us sexier, no?

Oh!! Its the Click Five that sings that?! LOL... i thought that was Jonas Bros!

I dont mind liking click five then ;) their version of I Think we're alone now rocks... ill have to post it soon!

I was wondering that too, Paul--yup, they do have a song called "Jenny." And I ADORE that cover of theirs! It's so fantastic. Sigh...I love them. Well, maybe--we'll see what happens on their next album. If they even get one :-/

D'luv, I can't blame you. But yes, that's a universal truth!
