Hope this happens today

Gosh! Melodifestivalen fever takes over, I pay a little less attention to UK artists, and look what happens--Gareth Gates puts clips of songs on his MySpace, is working on redesigning his official site (though the version there at the moment is a redesign, too), announces the release date for his new single "Changes" (April 9), and announces the title of his new album (Pictures Of The Other Side). Heck, it's even being reviewed already (though I haven't heard anything about any songs we didn't already know)! He's doing a showcase of his new material tonight, so hopefully there will be more reviews and we'll get to hear about some of the other songs. Now, I promised over at You Don't Know Pop that I wasn't going to say anything bad about ballads in general for a week (if you haven't been checking that blog lately, absolutely go look at Troy's Valentine's Day dedicated post--all ballads, and so many good ones that I was inspired to make the aforementioned promise!), so I'll just say I hope there's news about some more mid- to up-tempo stuff. An official release date for a single, an official album title--I'm in mild shock!

I still maintain his second album is a classic--go buy it if you haven't already.

Ooh, new GG stuff isn't too bad. He's gone all dirgey, ala Brian McFadden when he split from Craplife.

I understand that there is some good upbeat stuff too. Just that for some reason the record company hasn't chosen to let us hear it yet.

Its all very exciting. Its been such a long time. Go Gareth

He has to be really careful if he goes down the acoustic route. The Bluntish route might kill him off for good.

Ooo, J'ason, that's not very reassuring--"dirgey" isn't what I want from my popstars! That's what happens when you write songs with a co-writer of the song that just won your poll, though, I guess. I'm surprised at your reaction, though.

It has been such a long time! Despite all the news and goings-on, I didn't really feel real to me until now...I guess the official release date has made me realize that this all is really happening!

Paul, I am still not convinced by "Changes"...but my choices for singles never seem to do well, so I've given up thinking I have any clue what sells.

I am worried, Robpop. I know I shouldn't be, but I am. We'll have to see what's on the album, though--arguably the best song on the last album, "Absolutely," wasn't ever a single, just tucked away as an album track, so who knows what we might not have heard yet. Still, I just don't know...I hope, though!

Well, I do like my dirges and ballads now and then, though I'm gathering you're not a big fan of ballads.

I like 'em epic and sweeping, too, ala said McFadden's "Real To Me" and All Saints' "Pure Shores."

Hmm, actually, you've given me an idea for the future...

I guess it's more difficult for me to get excited about ballads than fun uptempo songs. However, I do have some ballads I absolutely adore! In general, I think I prefer albums to have a lot more mid- to up-tempo songs than ballads--2, maybe 3 ballads on an 11 to 12 track album, or so. Still, some of the reviews have said Gareth is much better on the ballads than the uptempo songs, so maybe I'll have to give these slower songs a chance.
